Contextual Studies - White/Male Privilege and Female Role and Representation in Gaming

http://eric.ed.gov/?id=ED335262

From my personal experience in games, I haven't yet found any situations in game where you are rewarded for for being a white male, however I have noticed in a lot of games, nearly all actually the majority of the characters are white and male. Team fortress 2 is one example of this, all the characters are white except for one character class, the Demoman, where he is black. Also all the characters are male and include no female characters at all. Straight away this shows that this is a White Male dominated game with the exception of only one black character.
Another, but not as extreme, example of this occurring in video games is Final Fantasy 13, nearly all the characters are white with the exception of Sazh the only black playable character, the only difference from Team Fortress 2 is that a lot of the main protagonists are female (3 white females, 1 slightly darker skinned female, 2 white males, 1 black male) its essentially a White Female dominated game (speaking of in game characters not the games audience) since the female ratio is higher than the male ratio. Another example is Pokemon series, Sapphire/Ruby/Emerald all the way too Pokemon Black and White 2 you're character has always been white (male/female is a choice).

I could also talk about Final Fantasy here too, the female characters tend to have very revealing clothing in comparison the male characters. Snow for example (a white male character) is wearing a beanie, gloves, trench coat and jeans, Vanille (a white female character) is essentially wearing a very short top/bikini looking item of clothing  and a very short skirt. By all means its not the most revealing clothing in the world but in comparison to Snow who is virtually covered from head to toe and Vanille is closer to the opposite of that. I think in a lot of games, especially like Final Fantasy the females obviously have a huge role in the game since in 13 they are a large majority of the main protagonists but some of the females clothing could be considered made for the male audience. Though like it mentions in the video, this isn't any way pornographic as such, its just a representation of women some men would ideally like to see.
Continuing on from the video, moving on from games, about half way through the video he mentions about a comparison between a classic painting of a naked woman, and then a picture of a woman that would be considered pornographic, in comparison both the women had nearly the exact same facial expression whilst they were naked and what the context of the nudity is greatly changes what people perceive. I just found that to be a really interesting part in the video.
