For my first project where I need to make a game in UE4, I straight away knew that I wanted to create a side view runner game where your character is always running and you need to jump to land on other platforms, avoid obstacles and to gain power ups. As for ideas here is a list of potential possibilities for me to develop (names of the games are a work in progress):
- Bamboo Rush: Bamboo rush is a game that I attempted to make at college using Game Maker, though I made a somewhat functional prototype, It was still extremely buggy and not very playable and would love to give it a second go. The premise of the game is that you are a panda running through a bamboo forest to collect bamboo but there are obstacles in the way like pitfalls, bear traps and cages etc that you would need to avoid. The aim of the game is to travel as far as you can to beat your highscore and would be available for all ages, though its playable on PC, it would also suit an app store game.
- Dragon Dash: You're a dragon flying from people chasing and trying to hunt you down. I would aim for this to be a chinese style of art, so a chinese dragon, chinese city etc because I am a huge fan of the location myself and would love to create a game based on it. Gameplay wise it will be available to all ages and would most likely be an app store game. This idea is more of a Nyan cat kinda feel instead of the runner i mentioned at the start since you're main object is to avoid obstacles whilst flying instead of jumping onto platforms. Not 100% sure if I will go with this idea since its slightly different that what I planned to do but was worth keeping down on my blog at the same time.
- Slash and Dash: You're a medieval knight running away from a witch and as you're running there are obstacles you need to avoid and to grab much like the previous 2 games, however, since you are a knight wielding a sword you have the option of chopping some obstacles away with your sword. I thought of the to bring an alternative option to the runner making the player think 'will I have time to chop this obstacle? or would it be better to jump it instead?' bringing in another aspect to runner idea. Just to keep it different from the other two games, a realistic style to this game will give it an interesting take since most games of this demeanour are usually cartoony and/or aimed at kids.
As for inference, I plan to include parts in the background that slowly change to a darker and more mysterious environment with the addition of more obstacles to show the player (even if they may not realise it) that they are moving into more traitorous territory. Another inference idea I came up with is in my first idea Bamboo Rush. Since you are playing as a panda, seeing a bear trap for the first time usually gives you a good reason to avoid it because bear traps are never really good, I won't plan on putting text anywhere saying that the bear trap is bad but upon seeing it it is most likely the player will catch on that it is an obstacle to avoid.
